Natural Luxury Candles, Hand-Poured on the Isle of Harris
Every candle in this range begins with 100% natural soy wax and a fragrance oil that tells a story. From the fruity depth of Seilebost to the bright, zesty energy of Horgabost, each scent is named after either a real Harris beach or inspired by the island we call home and poured in small batches by our island team. Whether you want something bold for your living room or soothing for your bathroom, you'll find your scent here.
A cleaner burn for your home: natural soy wax produces far less soot than paraffin, keeping your air fresher across every burn.
A fragrance that lasts longer: soy burns at a lower temperature than paraffin, giving you more hours from every candle
Specific, named scents: every fragrance is built around real scent notes you can identify, not vague descriptors
Covers every mood: from sharp citrus blends to deep, woody scents, the range holds something for every room and every occasion.
Why We Only Use Natural Soy Wax in Our Scottish Candles
Our soy wax is made from renewable soybeans, rather than petroleum by-products. This is what gives our candles a slower, cleaner burn and a fragrance that performs throughout the full life of the candle, not just when first lit. On Harris, we've worked only with natural soy wax from the beginning. It fits the environment we work in, and the products we want to make: honest, natural, and worth coming back to.
From that first burn: when first lighting your candle, burn it until the melt pool reaches the full edge of the vessel, which takes around two hours. That first burn sets the pattern for every burn after it.
Subtle & natural scents: soy wax releases scent gradually and consistently, so you will be enjoying the fragrance for longer without being overwhelmed.
Sensitive gifting: every candle is vegan and paraben-free, with no synthetic dyes.
The Soy Wax Candle Range
Rich with sweet plum, pomegranate, and patchouli, our Seilebost candle is sophisticated and deeply fruity. Named after the intimate cove tucked into the south-west of the island, it suits the kind of evening where you want the light low, and everything else quieter.
Light and effortlessly soothing, our Losgaintir candle layers bergamot, white tea, and coconut into a fragrance that settles a room gently. Named after the longest stretch of white sand on the island, it belongs in a bathroom or anywhere you go to slow down.
Vibrant and zesty, our Horgabost candle delivers a sharp hit of lemongrass, lemon and ginger, rounded out by eucalyptus underneath. Light it at your desk on a slow afternoon when you want energy and warmth in equal measure, even on the coldest mornings on the island.
Subtle and sweet with peony, jasmine, and white musk, Peony Whisper takes inspiration from the machair: the wildflower meadows that bloom along the beaches of Harris each spring. It's the softest scent in the range, and the one we'd choose for a quiet, romantic evening in.
Warm and indulgent, Adru is the most elemental candle in the range. Wild nettle, black peppercorn, and sandalwood come together in a deep, grounding blend that carries the rugged character of Harris's western coast. It's best in a living room or study, where a bold scent has room to breathe.
How to Choose the Right Soy Candle for Your Home
100% Natural Soy Wax Construction: made from a renewable crop rather than petroleum by-products, soy wax burns more cleanly and holds fragrance more effectively across the full life of the candle.
Ring-Spun Cotton Wicks: a clean-burning wick that draws the wax evenly across the full melt pool, reducing tunnelling and ensuring the candle performs consistently from the first burn to the last.
Small-Batch Hand Pouring: our team hand-pours every candle in small batches on Harris, checking each one individually before it leaves the island.
Even Burn Profile: a consistent melt pool from edge to edge prevents tunnelling and ensures the full fragrance throw is released throughout the candle's life, not only in the first hour.
A well-made soy wax candle performs just as well on the final burn as the first. The key indicator is the melt pool: on the first burn, the wax should reach the full edge of the vessel. This sets the pattern for every burn after it. A candle that tunnels on the first use tunnels throughout its life, regardless of the wax quality. Ring-spun cotton wicks draw the wax correctly and hold a steady flame, which keeps the melt pool moving evenly outward.
Fragrance throw varies by wax type. Paraffin candles often carry a stronger cold throw, the scent you notice in the packaging, but natural soy wax outperforms paraffin on hot throw: the fragrance you actually experience when the candle burns. Premium fragrance oils, combined with soy wax, deliver a fuller scent across the whole burn rather than fading once the surface layer melts.
The Essence of Harris candle range uses a 100% natural soy wax blend with premium fragrance oils and ring-spun cotton wicks across every product. Every candle is hand-poured on the Isle of Harris in small batches, which means consistent quality and a genuinely traceable provenance across every scent in the range.
Soy Wax Candle FAQs
What are soy wax candles made from?
Soy wax comes from soybeans, a natural and renewable plant crop. It burns at a lower temperature than paraffin, releasing fragrance more gradually, and produces less soot, making it a better choice for everyday home use. Every Essence of Harris candle uses 100% natural soy wax.
How do I stop my soy candle from tunnelling?
Allow the melt pool to reach the full edge of the vessel on the very first burn; this usually takes around two to four hours, depending on the size of the candle. The first burn determines how the candle performs from that point on. Extinguish it too early and a memory ring forms in the wax, causing the candle to tunnel on every subsequent burn.
How long does a soy candle last?
Burn time depends on candle size and how you care for it. Trim the wick to around 5mm before each burn, avoid lighting for fewer than two hours at a time, and keep the candle away from draughts. Soy wax burns slower than paraffin, so you get more hours per gram of wax regardless.
Are your soy candles vegan?
Yes. Every candle in the Essence of Harris range is made with 100% natural soy wax and premium fragrance oils that are vegan and paraben-free. There are no animal-derived ingredients in the wax, the fragrance blend, or any other element of the product.
How should I care for my candle between burns?
Trim the wick to around 5mm before each lighting. This keeps the flame at the right height and prevents the wick from mushrooming, which can cause uneven burning and excess soot. Always burn the candle in a draught-free space and keep it away from direct sunlight, which can affect the wax and cause colour fading over time.
