Essence of Harris was created by couple, Jamie and Deenie.
Deenie is native to the island and Jamie, originally from Glasgow, has made the Isle of Harris his home over the past 7 years.
Candles were one thing that they both immensely enjoyed having in their home yet there wasn't anyone creating the products in the Hebrides. Inspired by the elements of the island, particularly the beaches, they started experimenting with different scents and candle making at home. Before long 'Essence of Harris' was born! There's a real interest in the candles and home fragrance among tourists who are blown away by the scenery on Harris and want to take an 'Essence of Harris' home!
In its first year the company gained its very own production unit, a number of Scottish stockists and two of their own retail outlets. One of which is in Tarbert the other is situated within the departure lounge of Inverness Airport. 2.5 years later with five luxurious scents each named after the stunning Harris beaches plus some limited edition seasonal scents, the business is growing from strength to strength. Stocked in over 40 retailers across Scotland and a selling via a few agents abroad, it's a really exciting time for the team!
Those of you not so familiar with the Outer Hebrides may be surprised to hear that the close-knit yet sparse community on the Isle of Harris totals a mere 1,916 people. At Essence of Harris we’re proud not just of the products we make, but also of the employment we’ve created for our small island economy. Attracting and retaining staff in such a remote part of the world is always a challenge but the more locals you meet, the more you realise many of them come from afar; mainland Scotland, England, Europe and beyond, attracted by the unique quality of life.
If you have the chance, take a trip to Harris, pop into our shop and factory to see how we make our products, we'd love to meet you!
